This precision sundial is made so that it gives the solar time as well as the clock time.
On the middle of the front disk one can see a map of the Northern hemisphere.
The installation is so that the local meridien (the one from Ham) is placed just on the North-South axis.
The shadow of the style indicates on the map the place where the sun is at the highest, so at the South. It is then at this place true midday.
One will see the Southern hemisphere on the other side of the disk.
The outside ring can be turned.
In order to read the solar time one will set the number 12 against the letters LAT (Local Apparent Time).
To read the clock time, just set the number 12 against the letters CET (Central European Time) - and for the summer time use the letters CEST (Central European Summer Time).
One must daily adapt this position to take the equation of time into account (not for the solar time). This is why there is some scale for 20 minutes.
The equation of time is corrective factor that varies from about -15 minutes to about +15 minutes depending on the date.
One will read the time on the above surface of the disk during spring and summer (the sun is above the disk). The time will be read on the surface beneath during autumn and winter (the sun is beneath the disk).
The dial has a 60 cm diamater. It is made of stainless steel. All indications have been made by a LASER assisted by a computer. The map is protected under a ceramic glass.
This dial of type Solaris 600 is made by engineer Carlo Heller at his Helios enterprise in Wiesbaden. The construction in Ham was the the first to be delivered in Belgium.
