This sundial is remarkable due to the sobriety of its design. To the essential parts, the table and the style are only added the elements required to provide stability to the sundial.
Hubert Sarton (1748 1828) was a famous clockmaker from Liège, inventor of the automatic clockwork with rotor. Thanks to the help of the Prince-bishop of Liège François-Charles de Velbruck who nominated him first mechanic he could create wonderful things. The castle of Heks was countryhouse and hunting seat of the Prince-bishop de Velbruck.
There is such a sundial in the castle of Hamal in Tongeren but the owner does not allow seeing it.
